Museums Galleries Scotland Conference i Edinburgh: inspirational examples of best practice in the 21st century
This conference is aimed at all those working in culture, heritage and the third sector and will provide a platform for best practice in the 21st century. We are seeking contributions from both the museum and gallery sector and beyond which demonstrate unique or innovative approaches to changing times. The conference will create opportunities for knowledge exchange between museums and galleries and other sectors.
The conference will demonstrate how museums and galleries can create opportunities for significant and dynamic change. It will explore the wider themes of sustainability, innovation, entrepreneurship, social enterprise, partnership and resilience.
The conference will provide both an inspirational and practical insight into different ways of working both in Scotland and internationally. Furthermore, the conference will create opportunities for knowledge exchange between museums and galleries and other sectors. It is aimed at all those working in culture, heritage and the third sector and will provide a platform for best practices in the 21st century.
The line-up reveals a packed programme of speakers and breakout sessions that highlight inspirational examples of best practice in the 21st century. The programme pivots around three central themes: new partnerships; sustainability and entrepreneurship.
• New partnerships – working in partnership can provide stronger projects and results. New partnerships will look at how collaborative working can deliver innovative projects but also looks at how museums can attract new partners.
• Sustainability - sustainability covers economic, environmental and social areas. It will look at practice, projects and organizations looking to resource their organizations in new and innovative ways and being less reliant on traditional forms of public funding.
• Entrepreneurship – is about doing things innovatively and differently. It will encompass both an entrepreneurial business style and also new and effective ways of working ( through the social media, creative fundraising & resourcing, new approaches to learning, and improved standards).
Delegates from the cultural, heritage and the third sectors will take part in a stimulating day where consideration of new ways of working is actively encouraged. Sessions cover several emerging concepts – from ‘Museumpreneurs’ to how to build ‘happy social enterprises’. Dynamism is carried right through to the closing stages of the conference via Japan’s latest craze, Pecha Kucha, where speakers tell their story in 20 slides for 20 seconds.
Joanne Orr, CEO, Museums Galleries Scotland said:
“We are proud to host our first event on this scale and delighted to offer such an inspirational programme. The conference is a great opportunity to discuss best practices in the 21st century and we look forward to welcoming stimulating speakers from around world. Collaborating to Compete will bring like-minded people together to be inspired, encouraged and think about ways to collaborate – not only to overcome the current economic challenges – but to shape a sustainable and successful future. It’s an opportunity to come together and discuss the burning issues.”
Collaborating to Compete will take place at the Surgeons Hall, Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh on Friday 16 September 2011.
