Effective Communication and Negotiation Across Cultures – a University of Copenhagen course on 15-19 August 2011 which will provide the stepping stones towards best practice and cultural intelligence.
Is your communication with your Chinese counterpart crashing because he is Chinese or because he is just having a bad day?
Communicating and negotiating across cultures can be frustrating, time- and money consuming as conflict or even collapse of communication can easily occur. Most people agree that knowledge about culture is crucial in the globalized world, but we do also build up myths of what affects communication and negotiation.
The course intends to deconstruct some of these myths and create an insight into what kind of knowledge and what kinds of compe-tences are actually needed to communicate effectively. National culture, being it Greek, Indian or Omani, is often regarded as a steady framework that guides behavior and therefore easier to predict. But in reality the world is far more chaotic! ‘National culture' has many flaws and does not sufficiently address the complexity and unpredictability of cultural interaction. The course will provide the stepping stones towards best practice and cultural intelligence.
After the course you will:
The course will go beyond the common culture crash course and focus on the newest knowledge about culture and communication as ongoing processes of negotiation. We will deal with culture in some of the important emerging arenas on the global scene. A number of cases will illustrate dilemmas, absurdities etc. and we might also work with some of the participants' own cases.
The course is for professionals working in private businesses, government agencies, NGO's and other areas with a need to communicate and interact successfully with people with cultural backgrounds others than their own. Participants should at least hold a bachelor's degree or equivalent.
