England: Symposium on 'Beyond Cultural Diversity'

“A new approach to creativity and diversity”.

50 artists and companies from England have been chosen to present work at the fifth decibel Performing Arts Showcase in Manchester from 12-16 September 2011. The event will also include a seminar on Beyond Cultural Diversity - a Third Text publication in partnership with Arts Council England, which outlines the creative case for diversity and equality in the arts. Registration for both events opened in April, with support available for international delegates.

 

Showcase provides UK and international arts professionals with the opportunity to preview innovative and culturally diverse productions from some of this country’s most talented performing artists and companies. All the performances have been selected for their creative excellence and ability to appeal to national and international audiences.

 

Work selected this year ranges from cutting-edge audio-visual music performances and digitally interactive dramas, to explosive theatre, enchanting puppetry, engaging live art and close-to-the-bone spoken word. It includes tour ready productions from, Rouge28 Theatre, Joseph Mercier and Ayanna Witter-Johnson; new works-in-progress from Eggs Collective, Mind the Gap and ESKA; and original pitches from Sarah Pickthall, Two Gents Production and Jane Sekonya-John

The artists and companies selected for Showcase represent the most exciting new work coming out of England’s culturally rich performing arts scene. With our complementary networking activities and a symposium on the future of cultural diversity, decibel 2011 is an essential event for anyone looking to broaden their programmes, audiences and contacts.”

 

National and international promoters, producers, programmers, artistic directors and venue managers are invited to see extracts from leading artists’ latest productions and new and developing work. Networking opportunities then lead to longer term relationships, which see delegates booking artists’ work or collaborating with them to develop their ideas further.

 

A series of complementary activities for delegates will take place alongside the showcase performances. These will range from introductory forums for first-time attendees, to an industry marketplace and panel discussions on issues such as diversity, touring and presenting work, or best practice for the sector. 

 

 

1. The purpose of the decibel Performing Arts Showcase is to promote diverse practice in the performing arts sector. The biannual showcase aims to more fully represent and reflect the different cultures and backgrounds that make our country unique in the world. Arts Council England welcomed submissions from all artists and companies with diverse practice. This includes, but is not limited to, artists from black and minority ethnic backgrounds, disabled people or any other artist who may have had limited opportunities to participate in the arts.

 

2. Arts Council England works to get great art to everyone by championing, developing and investing in artistic experiences that enrich people’s lives. We support a range of artistic activities from theatre to music, literature to dance, photography to digital art, and carnival to crafts. Great art inspires us, brings us together and teaches us about ourselves, and the world around us. In short, it makes life better.? Between 2011 and 2015, we will invest £1.4 billion of public money from government and a further £0.85 billion from the National Lottery to create these experiences for as many people as possible across the country.
 

3. Merseyside Dance Initiative (MDI) was established in 1993 to provide a strategic overview for dance development in Liverpool, the Merseyside region and beyond. It is a dance development agency with a long and successful history of producing, presenting and promoting dance in the region and its work is seen as having local, national and international significance.? MDI inspires people to take part, create and see dance. It works in partnership with artists, venues and others in an environment that is inclusive, supportive, challenging and innovative. Its focus is on strengthening the dance sector, by nurturing and sustaining a healthy dance culture.

About the 5th decibel Performing Arts Showcase & Creative Case Symposium
Twice a year, the decibel Performing Arts Showcase hosts an event to promote diverse practice in the performing arts sector in order to more fully represent and reflect the different cultures and backgrounds that make our country unique in the world.
This September’s showcase includes 50 of England’s most exciting diverse artists and companies who will present their work to a range of UK and international delegates and, in collaboration with the Arts Council England, will offer a seminar on the Beyond Cultural Diversity publication and to focus on its themes. The general goal of the showcase is to provide delegates with the opportunity to preview innovative and culturally diverse productions from some of the country’s most talented performing artists and companies in hopes of understanding and experiencing the benefits of diversity in the arts sector.
